Humanitarian Music & Arts Outreach for Children

SHADD’s humanitarian efforts focus on bringing music and creative expression to autistic and pediatric cancer patients at hospitals and rehabilitation centers such as The Hospital for Sick Children in Washington, DC through specially provided and painted pianos. These programs are designed to meet children where they are—whether they are able to actively learn and play or simply participate in the joyful experience of painting and interacting with music. For many of these children, the piano becomes more than an instrument; it becomes a source of comfort, stimulation, and emotional release during long hospital stays and difficult treatments.

Each piano is transformed into a work of art by the children themselves under the guidance of trained educators, art instructors, and medical staff, giving them a sense of ownership and accomplishment. The act of painting and playing allows children to express feelings they may not yet have words for, while also creating moments of normal childhood joy within a clinical environment. Even for children with limited physical or cognitive ability, participation becomes therapeutic—engaging motor skills, imagination, and emotional connection in a way that is gentle and empowering.

These moments of creativity and music also offer relief to families who face daily emotional and financial hardships, reminding parents that their children are still children first — capable of joy, imagination, and connection even in the midst of illness. In this way, SHADD’s humanitarian work serves not only the child but the entire family unit, bringing light, dignity, and hope into some of life’s most challenging circumstances.

The nurses and children had a wonderful time painting the pianos.

We created fun painting activities for the children…and the nurses!
